The Courtyard House, Croydon

The Courtyard House, designed by Whitcher Matyear Architects, is a masterful example of modern architecture that seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor living. Located behind an existing period dwelling, a beautifully crafted single-storey pavilion has been placed in the expansive back garden, creating a connection between the living spaces and the surrounding landscape. The pavilion’s design allows for direct engagement with two distinct outdoor spaces: an open lawn and a sun-drenched courtyard, providing a unique and relaxing atmosphere.

The simple yet elegant brick pavilion is punctuated by a series of expertly crafted timber window and door boxes, which invite occupants to linger at the threshold between indoors and out. This thoughtful design element blurs the lines between the built environment and the natural world, creating a sense of continuity between the two. The result is a living space that feels connected to its surroundings, allowing occupants to immerse themselves in the garden while still enjoying the comforts of a beautifully designed home.
